Prayer has been used by every believer in the history of faith. Even Jesus Christ Himself prayed to His Father in Heaven. Prayer for the believers of the past was the primary means to express faith. Adam prayed to God when he simpily talked with God in the Garden of Eden.
There are many things that believers of old did in the past that we do not do nor feel that we should. A great example of this is animal sacrifices. Animal sacrifices were a primary means for believers of old to present themselves before God. Yet no one seems to do so today.

While Jesus does give us freedom from the need for things physical that does not elimiate the simple usefullness of talking to God. While there is no command telling us to talk to God, there is also no command to tell us to inhale or exhale. But inhaling and exhaling proves very useful for us for the benefit of living. As breathing helps with physical life so talking with God helps with our relationship with Him. Our relationship is useful for our spiritual health as we are not perfect in conversion, but need to strive to perfection after conversion.
Jesus has freed us from the need to perform physical acts to be close to God. He did this when the veil that separated the Holy of Holies from man was ripped into two. Our acceptance of God is all that is needed to unite us with God.
